Living Colour @ Paradise Rock Club; April 5, 2013
I had been looking forward to a live Living Colour show for a long time. I’ve seen a few of their TV performances (anybody remembers Arsenio?), their DVDs, and a few youtube videos, but had never been to one of their live shows. I got really excited just thinking about it, and for them to play Vivid in its entirety made it extra special for me. This was a sold out event, by the way, and the line was gigantic. The Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA can host almost a thousand fans, and just minutes before the band walked out onstage, the venue was packed from corner to corner.
Even though these are seasoned veterans, they play with the intensity and energy of youth. They make what they do onstage look easy. Take Vernon Reid. He is hands down one of the best fretboard slingers alive today, and his playing style is astonishing, to say the least. His playing style is effortless and smooth, yet ferocious and in-your-face. I was also blown away by Corey Glover’s amazing vocals, which are better than ever. There’s only a handful of singers that I have seen live who actually sound as good or better than the recorded pieces they’ve done, and Mr. Glover is one of the top on my list. His magnificent rendition of “Amazing Grace” showcased his broad and soulful vocal range, and unmistakably wowed the Paradise audience. In the rhythm section, Doug Wimbish’s bass grooves and showmanship kept everyone moving all night. He is a phenomenally gifted and technically brilliant 4-string player. His accomplishments have been acknowledged on countless bass-related publications. Finally, Will Calhoun on drums was, simply put, a monster. His drum solo towards the end of the show was flawless, and the guy didn’t even break a sweat. Not only they’re amazing musicians who play with such passion and dedication, but they’re also some of the nicest people you could ever meet. Make sure to catch them the next time they roll into town. I know I will!
